The Steinbeis Foundation was established in 1971 as a charitable foundation under civil law. It is named after Ferdinand von Steinbeis, who has made an outstanding contribution in the 19th century to a "modern industrial, commercial and economic development" in Baden-Württemberg.
The development and expansion of the Steinbeis Foundation began in 1983 with Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c.mult. Johann Löhn as the new Chairman of the Board of the Steinbeis Foundation and in personal union Government Commissioner for Technology Transfer. Prof. Löhn forced the creation of a network of specialized transfer centers with the aim to establish the Foundation as a global services company.
The 1998 founded Steinbeis GmbH & Co. KG for Technology Transfer the Steinbeis Foundation received an operational unit for enhanced economic activity. That same year, the Steinbeis University Berlin was founded.
